Application of Remote Sensing Technology to Assessment of Moisture and Cracks from Dry Evaporation of Fine Grained Soils
Abstract
This paper presents a study on the moisture holding behavior of fine-grained soils and their swelling and shrinkage. The study also proposes modeling approach to estimate the depth of soil cracks that may occur by applying unsaturated soils mechanics and remote sensing technology. By calibrating moisture data from remote sensing technology with those obtained from field measurement and converting it to soil suction based on the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) obtained from laboratory tests. The suction change can then be used to predict the depth of cracks based on elastic theory.
