Abstract

Using of the speed hump and speed bump is one of the most common traffic calming measures in the local or low traffic volume roadways. The main purposes of using them are to slow down the vehicle speed and reduce the traffic volume around the area of installation. Results from previous studies pointed out that the properly deploy of these calming devices can significantly reduce number and severity of the road accident. However, speed hump and speed bump could be considered as obstacles installed on the road surface. Therefore, the inappropriate usages of these devices could generate traffic accidents. This research aims to investigate and compare the speeds behavior of various types of vehicles before and after crossing speed hump and speed bump. The data was collected by using VDO cameras to record the traffic behavior within the study sites which were the roadways located in the outskirts of Bangkok. The collected data were then analyzed to find the speed profiles and behaviors of various vehicle types before and after passing speed hump and bump. The statistical methods were also applied to test the degree of significance of the outcomes. Finally, the behavior of various vehicles within the traffic calming zone from the study results can be used as a basis for decision-making in the selection and installation of the appropriate speed hump and speed bump in order to ensure the maximum safety for road users.
