Pedestrian Smart Pedestrian Crossing Effectiveness Speed SafetyAbstract
In Thailand, Pedestrian is a vulnerable road user group who has high risks to have hit by a vehicle and get seriously injured when being hit, with a fatality rate of 7.6%. This paper presents an effectiveness evaluation of smart pedestrian crossing with traffic signals and traffic stream detector. The existing zebra crossing on Kanjanavanich Road before the Nam Krachai intersection was selected as a case study. In the study, road geometry, traffic volume, pedestrian volume, speed of vehicle and pedestrian, driving and walking behaviors across the crosswalk before and after installation of smart crossing equipment, considering workday and holiday, and peak and off-peak periods. The collected data were then used to analyze the effectiveness of smart pedestrian crossing both the safety issues of pedestrian and vehicle and traffic issues, such as traffic volume and delay. The results revealed that the smart pedestrian crossing improve the safety of pedestrian significantly because the traffic signals installed could reduce the speed of vehicles substantially. In addition, the number of pedestrian crossings increases obviously. However, the reduction of vehicle speed could cause some delay and queue of vehicles. But overall, the installation of smart pedestrian crossing has increased the safety of both pedestrians and vehicles passing through this test section.
